Do you love that thick foam in your shaving cream? The mountains of bubbles in your bath? The satisfying lather when you wash your hair or scrub your hands? Most of us do. We've grown up believing that foam means clean — the more, the better.

But here's the truth nobody puts on the front of the bottle: that foam is created by one of the most widely used — and most controversial — ingredients in the personal care industry. The same ingredient used in engine degreasers and industrial floor cleaners.

It's called Sodium Lauryl Sulfate. And it's in almost everything.

What Is SLS?

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) is a synthetic surfactant — a cleansing and foaming agent derived from petroleum or palm oil. It's cheap to produce, incredibly effective at creating foam, and has been used in personal care and household products since the 1930s. That's why it's everywhere.

  • Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS)
  • Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES) — a milder derivative, but still problematic
  • Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate (ALS)
  • Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate
  • Lauryl Sodium Sulfate

Where Is SLS Found?

SLS is one of the most widely used ingredients in the world. The foam is the giveaway — if a product lathers dramatically, there's a very good chance SLS is behind it. Here's where you'll find it hiding:

In Your Shower

  • Shampoos — that big, satisfying lather when you wash your hair? Almost certainly SLS. It's in the vast majority of mainstream shampoos.
  • Shampoo bars — don't be fooled by the "natural" appearance. Many commercial shampoo bars are simply compressed liquid shampoo formulas and still contain SLS or SLES. Always read the label.
  • Body washes and shower gels — the more it foams, the more likely it contains SLS.
  • Liquid soaps — both hand soap and body soap in liquid form frequently contain SLS as the primary cleansing agent.
  • Shaving creams and foaming shave gels — that thick, dense foam that builds up in your hand? SLS is almost always responsible. It's one of the highest-concentration uses of SLS in personal care.
  • Bubble baths and bath bombs — especially the ones that produce mountains of bubbles.

In Your Bathroom Cabinet

  • Toothpaste — yes, even most mainstream toothpastes contain SLS. It's what makes toothpaste foam when you brush.
  • Face washes and cleansers — particularly gel and foaming cleansers marketed for oily or acne-prone skin.
  • Mouthwash — some formulas include SLS for its foaming and cleansing effect.

Around the House

  • Dish soap — the foam that fills your sink is largely SLS-driven.
  • Laundry detergent
  • Floor cleaners and surface sprays
  • Engine degreasers and industrial cleaners — the same ingredient, in a stronger concentration.

That last point is worth sitting with. SLS is used in industrial degreasers — and it's also in your daily face wash and the shaving cream you use every morning.

How to Check If a Product Contains SLS

Reading labels is your first line of defence. Here's how to do it effectively:

  1. Look at the full INCI ingredient list — usually printed in small text on the back or bottom of the product. Ingredients are listed from highest to lowest concentration.
  2. Search for any of the names listed above — SLS, SLES, ALS, Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate.
  3. Be cautious of vague terms like "derived from coconut" — this can be used to describe SLS that has been processed from coconut oil, but it's still SLS.
  4. Look for certified natural or SLS-free labels — but always verify by reading the actual ingredient list, not just the front-of-pack claims.
  5. Use apps like INCI Beauty or Think Dirty to scan barcodes and get ingredient breakdowns instantly.

Why You Should Stay Away From SLS

The foam feels good. We know. But here's what's happening beneath the surface:

1. It Strips Your Skin's Natural Barrier

SLS is a powerful degreaser. On your skin, that means it strips away the natural oils (sebum) that protect and moisturise your skin. This disrupts your skin's microbiome and moisture barrier — leaving skin dry, tight, and vulnerable. For people with eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, or sensitive skin, SLS can be a significant trigger.

2. It Causes Irritation and Inflammation

SLS is a known irritant. Studies have shown it can cause contact dermatitis, redness, and inflammation — even in people who don't consider themselves to have sensitive skin. Regular exposure compounds the effect over time.

3. It May Worsen Mouth Ulcers

Research has linked SLS in toothpaste to an increased frequency of aphthous ulcers (mouth sores). Switching to an SLS-free toothpaste has helped many people reduce recurring ulcers significantly.

4. It Penetrates the Skin

SLS doesn't just sit on the surface. Studies have shown it can penetrate the skin barrier and accumulate in tissues — including the liver, lungs, heart, and brain — with prolonged exposure. While the quantities from cosmetic use are considered low, the cumulative effect of daily use across multiple products adds up.

5. Environmental Impact

SLS is toxic to aquatic organisms. It doesn't break down easily in water systems, and its production — particularly when derived from palm oil — contributes to deforestation and habitat destruction. Choosing SLS-free products is also a vote for a cleaner planet.

So What Do You Use Instead?

This is the question we get asked most often. If not SLS, what creates the lather?

SCI — Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate (also known as "Baby Foam")

Derived from coconut oil, SCI has earned the nickname "baby foam" in the formulation world — because it's so exceptionally gentle it's the surfactant of choice for baby washes, baby shampoos, and products designed for the most sensitive skin. It produces a rich, creamy lather without stripping the skin's natural oils. It's biodegradable, non-irritating, and leaves skin feeling soft and nourished rather than tight and dry. You'll find it in our cleansing bars — it's what gives them that luxurious, skin-kind lather without any of the harshness of SLS.

SLSa — Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate

Despite the similar-sounding name, SLSa is very different from SLS. It's a larger molecule, which means it cannot penetrate the skin barrier — it simply cleanses the surface and rinses away cleanly. It's derived from coconut and palm kernel oil, biodegradable, and rated as one of the safest surfactants available. It produces a beautiful, fluffy foam without the irritation.

Both SCI and SLSa are recognised as safe by cosmetic regulatory bodies and are widely used in natural and sensitive-skin formulations. They cost more than SLS — which is exactly why most mass-market brands don't use them. We think your skin is worth it.
