UNDERSTANDING ECZEMA
Eczema (also known as atopic dermatitis) is one of the most common chronic skin conditions in the world, affecting people of all ages — from newborns to adults. It's characterised by dry, itchy, inflamed skin that can flare unpredictably, significantly impacting quality of life. But with the right understanding and the right care, eczema can be managed effectively and naturally.
What Is Eczema?
Eczema is a chronic inflammatory skin condition caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. At its core, it involves a compromised skin barrier — the protective outer layer of the skin doesn't function properly, allowing moisture to escape and irritants and allergens to enter. This triggers an immune response that results in inflammation, itching, and the characteristic rash.
Common Symptoms
- Intense itching, often worse at night
- Dry, sensitive skin
- Red to brownish-grey patches
- Small, raised bumps that may weep fluid when scratched
- Thickened, cracked, or scaly skin
- Raw, swollen skin from scratching
Eczema most commonly appears on the hands, feet, ankles, wrists, neck, upper chest, eyelids, inside the bend of the elbows and knees, and in infants, on the face and scalp.
Common Triggers
- Dry skin — the most common trigger; skin that loses moisture easily is more prone to flares
- Irritants — soaps, detergents, shampoos, disinfectants, and synthetic fragrances
- Allergens — dust mites, pet dander, pollen, and mould
- Stress — emotional stress can trigger or worsen flares
- Sweat — heat and sweating can irritate eczema-prone skin
- Synthetic fabrics — polyester and wool can cause friction and irritation
- Harsh personal care products — products with parabens, sulphates, and artificial fragrances are common culprits
Natural Management Strategies
- Moisturise consistently — apply a rich, fragrance-free plant-based moisturiser immediately after bathing to lock in moisture
- Switch to natural personal care — eliminate synthetic fragrances, sulphates, and parabens from your routine
- Use hemp seed oil — its GLA content helps restore the skin barrier and reduce inflammation
- Lukewarm baths with magnesium — magnesium bath soaks can calm inflammation and reduce itching
- Identify and avoid triggers — keep a skin diary to track flares and identify patterns
- Manage stress — stress is a major eczema trigger; magnesium, aromatherapy, and calming rituals can help
- Use gentle laundry products — switch to plant-based, fragrance-free laundry detergents
Why Ingredients Matter
Many conventional skincare and household products contain ingredients that directly trigger eczema flares. Sulphates strip the skin's natural oils, synthetic fragrances cause allergic reactions, and preservatives like parabens disrupt the skin barrier. Switching to clean, plant-based alternatives is one of the most impactful changes you can make.
